Family, Gratitude and Joy

Day 133 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – Mother’s Day

This is a little different from what most people expect on Mothers Day. Instead of paying tribute to my mom and Greg’s mom and my heart-mom, I want to talk a little about being a mom!

I have two great kids. Well, they really aren’t kids. I have two adults. Both are parents, too, which means I’m also a grandmom. That’s eight kids-worth of hugs, love and joy.

Middle kids … all three of us.

I know many moms have difficulty coming to terms with being an empty nester. As a mom, I feel their pain, but I’ve often said if your child is successful and happy, you’re a success as a parent. After all, I reason, isn’t that what our job is? To love them and teach them to be responsible, successful adults in their own right?

I post pics of my daughter a lot, so this time I get to pick on my son.

Don’t get me wrong. When a child leaves home, that child takes a little piece of you with them. But we can’t cling too tightly, lest our children remain children too long. We have to be certain they know we will always be here for them, but also make sure they can solve their own problems. Like my parents did for me, I’ve helped both my kids out of tight spots once or twice, but I also push them to fix the problem so they don’t end up there again.

So, on this Mother’s Day, I look forward to the possibility each of them will pick up the phone to wish me a happy day. I hope to hear their voices and maybe even get to say hi to their kids, too. But … if they forget, because they are busy with their own families, I am secure in knowing they love me and appreciate me. I may not like missing out on the call, but I won’t lose any sleep over it either. (PS – Stacy and Chris – CALL ME!)

There are two more of them now … but getting together always takes precedence over pictures.

I am grateful for happy, healthy kids and grandkids and the joy I feel when I think of them.

There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored … and there’s a whole world of joy in my heart that I am a mom.
