Food, Gratitude and Joy

Day 249 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – Frozen Treats

I am an ice cream fanatic! I love ice cream so much that if I had to choose one thing to eat for the rest of my life it would be tough to choose between ice cream and pasta … but I think ice cream would win out. I’m fairly certain it’s genetic. I can’t remember a single day of my life when my dad didn’t have some ice cream. Even in his last days, he had ice cream every single day. No doubt his love of  this frozen confection deeply influenced mine.

I’ve done what I could to pass this on to my kids. When my daughter was very young we used to joke that she could smell an ice cream store from blocks away. We wandered over to our little neighborhood shop in Germany every day and, at least once a week she and I split a local specialty, Spaghetti Eis (German for “spaghetti ice cream”). It’s vanilla ice cream pressed through a ricer to look like noodles and topped with strawberries to mimic tomato sauce.

Spaghetti Eis is often sprinkled with white chocolate to add to the savory effect.

I can’t remember ever going to Italy and not enjoying gelato. I mean, it is the quintessential Italian dessert in my mind, easily surpassing things like tiramisu, panna cotta and cannoli.

Who can resist a cone of gelato?

Last night on the way home from dinner, we had to break a $20 bill to pay our puppy sitter. We were stuffed! It had been an indulgent feast at a local Italian place with friends. As we neared the neighborhood, we decided to stop at a gas station and grab some ice cream. They were out of my flavor so Greg picked up a dark chocolate Haagen-Das bar. We split it in the car on the way home.

That didn’t last long.

It made me feel like a teenager in summer. The top was down on the convertible. A warm desert breeze was blowing and I was sharing an ice cream cone with my date!

I remembered the popsicles in the freezer. Why hadn’t I eaten them? Why hadn’t I remembered to share them with my grandkids when they visited? Well, I guess I’ll have to dig into that bag as the summer winds to a close and relish the last few weeks of “pool season.”

There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Grab something frozen to cool off on a hot day.
