Day 255 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – Lessons Learned

There’s a saying that says with age comes wisdom. Of course, in my youth I questioned it, but as I age, I understand what it means and I agree. Wisdom comes from lessons learned.

Often they are learned the hard way. I can hear my dad telling me to use two hands to carry something or perform a task, but it’s not until I dropped something, or ruined what I was doing that I learned my lesson. There are definitely times I am still very careful to use two hands!

It’s the little things you stumble upon that make your life easier. We discovered recently that you can save 10% on parking at the airport if you go online and make a parking reservation. It’s simple. All you do is go to the website, pick your dates, pay and print up (or add to your phone wallet) the QR code.

Save money booking your parking before your trip.

How many times have you heard your mother’s voice to put on a hat or wear sunscreen? It’s only when those spots show up on your skin that you wish you had taken them seriously. Fortunately, modern medicine can deal with these issues if caught early.

Remember the first time you ate too many sweets? Remember your mother telling you that you would get a stomach ache and ruin your dinner? It doesn’t take long to learn she was right. The older you get, the more often you watch what you eat and avoid junk.

Wisdom, and maybe a little maturity, give you the ability to laugh at being wrong or poke a little fun instead of gloating when you can say, “I told you so.” It’s the time someone says “I’m sure it was a left turn” and you go right. A sizable detour later, you’re late to the party. The older I get the easier it is to laugh at these mistakes instead of fighting about them.

Not all detours are accidental.

There are dozens of things like these, reasons to appreciate getting older, because older is wiser.

There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Be grateful for the things you learn along the way.
