Family, Gratitude and Joy

Day 264 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – The Next Generation

Growing up an Air Force brat, we moved often and, like many fellow brats, we chatted and even bragged a bit about how many schools we attended between kindergarten and graduation. I longed for a lifestyle I’d never known, but saw often in movies and TV shows — a neighborhood with lifelong friends.

When my daughter was set to enter 8th grade and my son headed into a first grade classroom, we moved to a rural county near Washington DC. My children grew up in the same house until graduation. My daughter still lives nearby with her three children.

As she entered high school, Stacy got involved and eventually joined the track team as a pole vaulter. She did well and has reason to be proud of her accomplishments.

Learning to pole vault was new for Stacy and her coaches.

Fast forward to this week. Her son is now attending the same high school. Sam is on the cross country team as a freshman with his sights set on other sports in other seasons. A mere couple of weeks into the season he is already shaving minutes off his run time and poised to end the season with strong statistics.

My grandson, Sam, shows off his running skills.

His sister is now in middle school and, as a 6th grader, has made the cheerleading team. Lizzie called me when she made the team and expressed nervousness about learning all the cheers and doing well. She shouldn’t have worried. She was great!

Lizzie’s gymnastics background made her a natural for the top of the pyramid.

Being able to see these two compete on their teams fills me with gratitude and joy. I am thrilled to witness a second generation of family at the same school. I love hearing about the friends they’ve had since kindergarten who are still friends. I’m blessed to be able to travel across the country to spend time with them and share in their accomplishments!

There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Sometimes the best trips are those in which you spend time with family.
