We should all take a lesson from puppies. Our little guy has managed to make friends with nearly every dog (and human) he’s come across in his short life. Last night, it happened again.
We have neighbors with a Chi-Weenie, a Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. She is about three years old and grew up with a much older housemate. Since we met her, Lucy has been a bit of an old soul.
Beth and Jeff came over to dinner last night and brought Lucy. We’ve been trying to get Enzo and Lucy to be friends. They are close to the same size and they are both fairly young, so it seemed like the right place to start for play buddies. After their first couple of meetings we thought it might not happen. Lucy would snarl a tiny bit and Enzo, being just shy of seven months old, would bounce and tease and try to play.
Last night, they finally clicked. The two of them wrestled and frolicked under the table while we ate dinner and chatted the evening away.
We all watched them like proud parents. As I smiled at the playful pair, it occurred to me that I wish people could be friends as easily as dogs. These two cute pups, at their humans’ urging, kept trying until they got it right.
All four of us breathed a sigh of relief and gratitude when they started playing. Most of the other dogs in the neighborhood are big dogs and, while they are friendly, that makes for a challenge when your pup is less than a foot tall!
There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Make a new friend.
