Gratitude and Joy

Day 304 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – Simplicity

The older I get, the more I recognize how much I find joy in simplicity … from doing simple things to ensuring that my spaces are a little simpler.

This came in an epiphany-like wave the other night. Unable to sleep, I thought through all the things that have brought joy to my life. In a world filled with complication, I realized the things I truly loved to do were all fairly simple.

Like working on a crossword puzzle with my morning cup of coffee. Judy and I keep a big book of crosswords on the dining room table and we’ll work on them from time-to-time throughout the day. But working the morning puzzle stimulates my brain and helps me start the day with a smile as I fill in the clues.

A nice cup of coffee and a crossword puzzle are a simple way to start the day.

Like taking long walks. We’ve written several blogs about the joy our walks bring us. It’s something Judy and I have loved to do since our very beginnings … it’s not just about the exercise but about getting outside and breathing fresh air.

Like my favorite cars. Like many of a certain age, I learned to drive a car with a stick-shift, roll-down windows, and wing vents. There was a raw simplicity to cars back then that I still appreciate. The Fiat Spider roadster may have more bells and whistles, but it’s still a simple car with a manual transmission and manual-opening top. There’s a visceral feeling of getting out on the open road and running through the gears with the top down.

The simple things in life will always involve driving for me.

Like my workspace. Technology creep led to an overwhelming feeling at my desk. Yesterday, I simplified the space by removing a monitor and some unneeded items. The openness feels SO much more comfortable.

My desk was always neater than Judy’s, but now it’s much less crowded.

Like sunsets. Signaling the end of another great day, a glorious sunset is a sign that we are still small in the great picture. There’s something truly joyous about just sitting down with your loved one with a cocktail or glass of wine and sharing the memories of the day while the sun goes down.

The added clouds of a monsoonal storm made this sunset spectacular.

There’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored. Find the simple joys along life’s journey!
