Gratitude and Joy

Day 185 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – Pain Relief

A slight diversion from the stories about our epic Italy adventure as I share the utmost joy I am feeling this morning to wake up pain free.

Here’s the backstory. Like many my age, my body is feeling the effects of a life well lived. For me, the knees are bearing the brunt of this aging process as my meniscus wears away. In Italy, an awkward twist left my right knee in searing pain, and walking was a bit of a burden for the rest of the trip. Fortunately, this was near the end of the trip. I toughed it out, having been down this path before, but one of the first things I did when I got home was to make an appointment with my orthopedist!

Having experienced knee pain, I had a brace on hand.

Two weeks later, X-rays were taken, consultations happened, and Chad, my PA-C, shot my knee up with cortisone, urging me to keep exercising the knees. I am really grateful for their ongoing advice to keep doing what I’m doing and let medicine fix what wears away or breaks. I’ll need artificial knees down the road, but we’re a long way from that and the best thing I can do to prepare for that eventuality is to stay in shape and watch my weight.

The cortisone shot left a hole big enough to require a bandaid.

This morning I woke up a new man. My knee is pain free for the first time in nearly three weeks. I realized just how debilitating pain can be. My work productivity suffered. I wasn’t my usual playful self with the grandkids last week, although the pool certainly helped! My gym is growing cobwebs and I haven’t walked the neighborhood in ages. That all changes today. I’m attacking my to-do list and looking forward to getting some squats in.

Back at the gym and getting my exercise feels great.

There’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored. Take care of your body, take your doctors’ advice, and don’t let the aging process get the better of you so that you can really enjoy your adventures along the way.
