Like millions of Americans, I have an addiction to coffee and it’s one I refuse to give up. There’s nothing quite like the joy I feel when that first taste of hot, french roast crosses my tongue in the morning; a jolt to the senses that gets me ready for the day!
That’s why I love our coffee maker with its automatic brew cycle. As the weather has cooled, I often don’t want to get out of our nice warm bed, but the scent of the brewing coffee emanating from the kitchen teases me awake. The struggle is real! Ultimately, the coffee wins out. Having that steaming cup waiting for me makes it so much easier to face the day.

Speaking of the cooler weather, I must give a shout-out to our automated “smart” thermostats. We like it cool to cold when we sleep (well, Judy does!). I’ve set the schedules to begin warming the house before we get up. It’s another miracle of technology that makes our morning routine that much easier.

It seems like the rest of our house is run by Alexa. Lights turn on and off based on routines we’ve set with our Echo devices that activate smart plugs throughout the home. With simple commands — “Alexa, turn on the lounge” — we can turn on an entire room. Of course, she can be a bit finicky at times, but she’s smarter than the dial timers we had as kids (that we still use for the holidays).
I know these are silly things to be grateful for. We’ve lived for decades with simple switches to turn things like lights and the heat on and off and didn’t know any better. These, of course, were innovations our grandparents enjoyed over the lighting of gas lamps and wood stoves. Technology and automation is like that … you come to appreciate the often subtle ways it improves your life. I, for one, am grateful for these innovations.
It’s time to get another cup of coffee.
There’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored. Celebrate the innovations that make your journey easier!
