Gratitude and Joy

Day 138 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – Sunshine on My Shoulders

“Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy

Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry

Sunshine on the water looks so lovely

Sunshine almost always makes me high”

Sunshine on My Shoulders by John Denver

“Alexa, play songs by John Denver” is a common refrain in our house. There’s something about John Denver’s songs that always brings us joy. Perhaps it’s fitting that “Sunshine on My Shoulders” was playing as I started to write this blog.

I couldn’t help but think of Denver’s lyric “Sunshine on the water looks so lovey” when this photo was shared on another blog

Music always has a way of bringing out all sorts of emotions from happiness to sadness and everything in between. But John Denver’s songs seem to always be filled with joy and love, even his more melancholy ones like Leaving on a Jet Plane. Poems, Prayers and Promises reminds us of the joys of being home. Rocky Mountain High makes you feel like you’re on a hike in the prettiest place on earth. We’ve traveled through and in West Virginia, so Take Me Home, Country Roads instantly brings back the memories of those trips to a simpler place. And who can’t stomp their feet when Thank God I’m a Country Boy plays!

Over looking the New River Gorge, you feel what he meant when he described West Virginia as “almost Heaven.”

John Denver’s life was tragically cut short by a plane crash, but his legacy in the extensive library of songs he wrote and sang will be with us forever.

One of many John Denver albums I’ve owned.

There’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored. Let the music you love be your companion along the way!
