Gratitude and Joy

Day 229 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – Back to School

As a kid, I loved going back to school. It was normal to move during the summer and back to school meant getting to meet and make new friends. It always felt a little like Christmas, too.

Back to school meant new shoes, some new clothes and a big pile of school supplies. Some things never change. Kids are either already back in school or headed there and store shelves are loaded with pens, pencils, notebooks, and all manner of necessities. I’m reminded to pick up a few things for my supply closet.

Store shelves are filled with school essentials.

My kids are grown now and I’m watching the excitement of a second generation returning to school. I’m grateful for social media and those “first day” pics of my grandkids. It’s fun to see the smiles and enthusiasm. The oldest has been practicing with his team for weeks, the middle is trying out for a team and the little one is thrilled to be in first grade.

I’m lucky my daughter is active on social media.

Locally, school is back in session and the joyful sounds of kids on the playground during recess has returned. I rolled my windows down in the heat just to hear the laughter as I drove by a local elementary school on the way to the grocery store.

Kids are once again laughing and playing on the playground.

On the way home a familiar scene was taking place as I drove back past the same school. Groups of children lined up in the shade with their teacher counting the group — it was a fire drill! I’d forgotten about those, but the scene reminded me of that annual back-to-school tradition. I’m really happy some things never change.

Kids line up for fire drills worldwide.

Fall is around the corner. Football season is upon us. The weather will begin to cool and social media will be filled with images snapped by leaf peepers.

There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored … and it’s filled with kids going back to school.
