I just spent several days with friends I only see once or twice a year. Eve and Roarke live in New York City. She’s a murder cop; he’s a big time captain of industry, and; they live about 50 years in the future. They and their friends are the characters in a series of novels I’ve been reading for a few years now.
Several years ago I picked up a novel by JD Robb in an airport convenience store. It took awhile to get used to the futuristic phrases, but the murder mystery theme hooked me. By the end of the novel, I was searching my local library for other books in the series. I went back to book one and started the whole storyline from the beginning. The most recent edition is book 55.
The “In Death” series is one of many I read. Over the years I’ve gotten to know the main characters and the regulars who return in every book. Greg reads them, too, and we both feel like Eve and Roarke would be friends if they were real. It’s nice to see what they are up to when each new book is released.
Gabriel Allon and his wife, Chiara, in Daniel Silva’s series about the now-retired Israeli spy are another couple we’ve come to know. We enjoy their adventures and exploits, but they live in a different world and it’s unlikely we’d ever move in the same circles. Reading those novels is more like watching a great TV crime series. The same for the Mystery Man series by David Baldacci. Fascinating, fun, exciting reads to be sure, but somehow different from JD Robb’s series.

Now that I’ve finished “Desperation in Death” I’ll get back to my real friends, but it’s been fun spending a few days in the fictional world of 2067 New York City.
There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Sometimes all you have to do is get cozy in your favorite chair for a great adventure!
