Maybe the heat of the summer has me a little hot under the collar, but I’m in a bit of a “question the status quo” mood. I’ve written several blogs so I think I should create a series for you. I’m calling it “Why?”
Here’s the topic that started it all:
We were getting ready for our Independence Day celebration. We sat around talking about which classic items should be on the menu. We settled on burgers and dogs. Someone wanted potato salad; someone else wanted macaroni salad. Everyone agreed on corn-on-the-cob. This list goes on.
The question of drinks came up. That’s where the discussion got interesting. The kids wanted soda. The moms wanted them to have something healthier, but gave in because it was a holiday. One adult said, “Beer, of course. That’s what you drink with burgers.”
Uh … I thought … who says?? I’m not a beer-drinker. When I do pop the top, it’s a light beer and real beer aficionados rib me for it. I am OK with the occasional soda, but not all day. I suggested we open a nice bottle of wine. You could’ve heard a pin drop.

“What? No one drinks wine with burgers!” was thrown out. I argued why not? After all, burgers are beef and red wine goes well with beef. In the end, we all won. We had wine and beer available … but the discussion continued throughout the afternoon. It got us all thinking about all the times someone defines a perfect pairing.
Who says you have to have a margarita with your Mexican food? Who says white wine must be served with fish or chicken? Who says you have to have a beer with your bratwurst? I say drink what you want!

You want a glass of milk with your steak dinner? Go for it! You want to sip a margarita with your schnitzel? Sure! You prefer red wine with your shrimp and grits? It’s your choice!
There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Don’t let “normal” be your guide … eat, drink, and see what YOU want!
