We are exceptionally lucky. We moved into our neighborhood three years ago. At the time, every home on the street was brand new. It meant that everyone moving in was new to each other. Our little end of our street immediately bonded.
We started hosting almost weekly “happy hours” and we all fell into a pleasant routine of chatting and being friendly and helpful.
Then COVID hit! That didn’t stop us, but it did make for some creative meet-ups. We socially distanced in the early days of the pandemic gathering at the ends of our driveways for a spin on a block party.
The gatherings dropped back to less-than-monthly, but we all stayed in touch and got together as couples – smaller gatherings for safety and health reasons … but we still gathered.
Now, as the pandemic appears to be waning, we are once again meeting in larger groups. To be fair, we top out at about eight couples, so these are not huge parties, but they are a lifeline to normalcy.
I am so very grateful for my neighbors! We all get along. We enjoy each other’s company. They are my new family and they bring me joy every day.
There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. If you can’t travel far and wide, embrace those close to you.
