I awake as the sun streams through the shutters. Uncharacteristically, I’ve slept in. I’m an early riser, typically throwing off the covers and grabbing my first cup of coffee just as the first streaks of pink and orange break through the darkness of the eastern sky.
It’s morning. Perhaps something in my subconscious knew there was nothing on the calendar to urge my brain awake early. I’m rested and refreshed. I lay in bed for a few extra minutes listening to the clock ticking in the other room and reveling in the utter silence of a peaceful early morning. The scent of coffee wafts into the bedroom and I realize Greg is already up and, no doubt, scanning his email and setting his sights on the day ahead.
I realize it’s the perfect start to the day. Easy, quiet, stress-free. As I throw off the covers, I feel blessed. Everything is where it belongs, the sun is shining brightly … all is right with the world. I am immensely grateful for so many things in my life … this morning is a perfect example. I slide my slippers on, pour coffee over my two sugar cubes and inhale deeply.
As the days progresses, I tackle a few things on my to-do list. I throw a load of laundry into the washer, unload the dishwasher and check my email. All the things that fill a typical morning are comfortable. I consider all the things that bring me joy. I laugh with Greg as I remind him not to pinch me … in case this is a dream. I joke that if it is a dream, I don’t want to wake up. It hasn’t been easy getting here, but I am here and it’s amazing.
We enjoy lunch together – nothing special – reheated leftovers as we talk about our morning. Greg’s been working, I’ve been taking care of a few things around the house. He has afternoon meetings, so I fold the laundry, load the dishwasher and take a break to dive into the story of the latest book I’m reading. I pour a glass of wine and settle into a chair outside to soak up the sun’s rays.
It’s a perfect day. I never take these days for granted. I appreciate each and every little thing as much as I can. It’s part of why I write these daily expressions of gratitude and joy.
There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Be grateful and joyous at all the little things that happen each and every day.
