Gratitude and Joy

Day 249 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – It’s Fall (well, almost)

As I turned the page on my wall calendar this morning I felt a little surge of excitement. I love fall!

Changing the calendar to September fills me with thoughts of fall.

There are so many reasons to love this season. First off, the weather is cooling. Don’t get me wrong, I love the desert summer, but I am absolutely ready for the cooler morning breezes that are sneaking into the forecast.

Even though we don’t get fall colors on the desert floor, this time of year brings images of brightly colored leaves into my head. I am reminded of the fall trip we took on the Adirondack Express a few years ago. We scheduled it in March and somehow lucked out when the fall colors peaked on the day of our train ride. When we arrived in Montreal, the maple leaves were blazing.

The colors were brilliant on this tree in Montreal.

Let’s not forget pumpkins. There’s something fun and silly about pumpkins. The opportunity to switch out my summer decorations for the more colorful fall ones fills me with joy. My little collection of glass pumpkins will return to its shelf to welcome visitors. My colorful strands of leaves will return to the front gate, its matching wreath beaming from the front door.

My pretty glass pumpkins come out today.

Of course, it’s football season. The pre-season games are done and teams have pared their rosters as the real competition begins. I enjoy football “smack-talking” with friends who have favorite teams that will lose to my Steelers (teehee). I don’t take the season as seriously as most, but I have a lot of fun with it.

I confess, I looked up the cost of tickets to a game last week.

Finally, there are the flavors of fall. I am not a fan of pumpkin spice (except in a nice slice of pie), but it’s time for apples and cider and squash. It’s time to break out the soups and stews again. It’s the season of sweaters and boots and breezy days!

There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Embrace the changing weather as the calendar changes another page.
