Gratitude and Joy

Day 283 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – Tiny Toes

What is it about baby feet that make them so adorable? That question jumped into my head last night as my puppy curled his front feet up under himself and began to drift off to sleep while Greg and I played a game of scrabble.

Enzo’s tiny paws all curled up and cute.

His little paws are adorable and remind me of other baby feet. I am fairly certain if I looked hard enough I could find pictures of all six of my grandchildren’s feet somewhere in a box (or digital file). For some reason, snapping a shot of their tiny little toes is one of those things I’ve always done.

Sam was first … and his toes were moments old.

It’s not just me, though. As friends join the world of grandparenting, they post pictures of their new family members and, more often than not, include a snap of tiny little feet. For some reason, they just seem hard to resist.

Along came Lizzie, with her wrinkly newborn toes.

I’m not a foot person. I actually don’t like feet much at all. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pedicure with pretty toes. I just appreciate that feet are all the way down at the ground so I don’t have to interact with them. Except when it comes to baby feet.

Sam’s little feet were so tiny in his mom’s hands.

I wonder if it has something to do with the perfection of ten tiny toes. Maybe the soft, uncalloused skin and utter lack of funky foot odor? Perhaps somewhere in my mind there’s a metaphor for a world waiting to be explored on those brand new, unused feet? I’m not sure I have a real answer for why they are so gosh-darn adorable.

So here I sit in the middle of the night, typing up one of my strangest gratitude and joy blogs about feet … ok, not just any feet, but tiny ones. Inspired by teeny little puppy toes. I am grateful for the joy they bring and the new lives they represent.

There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. You gotta start somewhere.
