There is an immense feeling of satisfaction when a task is completed. That’s especially true when it’s something that turned out to be a lot more complicated than you expected.
DIYers will relate to the idea of a surprise complication. Who among us hasn’t tried to get something done around the house only to run into a situation that requires a last-minute trip to the store? When we renovated a bathroom in our Virginia townhouse, that happened more than once. Our long weekend project ended up taking close to six weeks, but in the end it was worth it.
Over the past couple of months I’ve been working on a redesign of some paperwork for a club I belong to. The old sign-out sheets worked great, but over the years some of the information needed to be updated and since that was necessary, club members requested a few other changes.
I thought that task would take about a month. HA! The joke was on me. It took a little over two months, a lot of cussing at my computer and some challenges uploading files to the printer, but it’s done!
Getting older has its benefits. I’m now much more likely to go with the flow when something unexpected occurs. My patience has increased with my experience leaving me in a better position to laugh about these challenges. It’s easier to stay calm and recognize when something is truly urgent. Then I can take a step back, breathe and calmly resume my efforts.

As I look back, I’m grateful for many of my accomplishments, but the recent ones always seem to bring a surge of joy.
There’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored. Celebrate the victories of a job well done!
