Yesterday a radio DJ announced there were 49 days until Christmas. My heart skipped a beat. A million thoughts suddenly ran through my mind: Oh, no, what am I getting the grands?; YIKES, I need to start getting the decorations out; Shoot – Enzo will need a stocking this year; and, WOW, I’m only 51 days from the end of this blog – what next?
The first questions are much easier now with the internet and amazon. I can chat with my son and daughter to confirm sizes and preferences. I can pop online – no holiday shopping crowds for me – and order gifts shipped directly to them.
Decorations are easy and, honestly, I’m a little anxious to get started because I have two new trees this year and I’m excited to see them go up. I try hard not to go crazy before Thanksgiving, but for the last two years I have put the tree up in our lounge and since that’s one of the new ones, it will probably go up this week.
We’re already thinking about what to prepare for holiday meals. Will Greg prepare his famous standing rib roast with Yorkshire pudding popovers? Or will it be the feast of the seven fishes again? Maybe we will do both, one for Christmas Eve and one for Christmas Day.
Then there’s the looming end of this “Year of” blog. Honestly, there’s a part of me that’s very sad to see the year end and another part that is looking forward to not thinking about what tomorrow’s blog will be. I wonder if it’s become something of a habit, though, and will be hard to break. Hmmm … maybe I’ll just change the theme.
Christmas and the new year really do give us a chance to shake off some of the weight of the ending year and get a fresh start. It’s fun to set our sights forward, but I think the holidays also give us a chance to celebrate our successes and joys.
There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Be ready for whatever comes next.
