Thirty-thousand feet over the so-called flyover states on a cross country flight, the patchwork quilt of the land is defined by roads going north and south, and others going east and west. I wonder … will I be on one of those roads this fall?
Even though we moved to Arizona six years ago, Judy and I still see our favorite dentist whose practice is just south of Richmond, VA. His wife runs the office and they are like family. Usually, we schedule our twice-yearly cleanings and checkups to coincide with a work trip to our nation’s capital, but with no planned trips on the horizon, we decided we’d take advantage of some “use or lose ” vacation days and plan a cross-country adventure. Looking down at these roads, I’m more than ready for this road trip!
The plan is to bomb across the country on interstates in four days, do our business on the east coast, then take our time coming back. We’ll zig zag north to see a friend in Michigan before heading southwest through the heartland. When we get to the Rockies, we’ll take a left and head south through Las Vegas (the one in New Mexico). While we’ll be on interstates for some of that trip, we’ll avoid them whenever possible and time allows, and permit ourselves the diversions to see cool stuff, eat at local restaurants, and generally experience the vastness of our great country.

The last time we drove cross country, from Virginia to Arizona by way of Florida, we did it in a two-seat convertible roadster. This time, we’re making some concessions for comfort. We’ve purchased a 12-volt fridge we can keep in the back of the SUV to keep some drinks and snacks cold, as well as some easily accessible containers for our clothes. Rather than drag full bags through hotel lobbies, we’ll grab just what we need at each stop. We’re even throwing in a few favorite cooking essentials such as good knives and some decent pans in a small bag for those stops where we can make our own food. For us, this is roughing it.
We’ll certainly be filing lots of posts along our way (or writing them when we get home). We’ĺl let you know how these new systems work. In the meantime I’m ready to roadtrip!
There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. See it from the road less traveled.
