Day 267 – A Year of Gratitude and Joy – Something Silly

Today is one of those days that you forget about until it comes around once a year. It’s Talk Like a Pirate Day. As silly as it sounds, this is one of my favorite days.

If you’ve ever met me in person, you know I love to do accents. I’m particularly proud of several. I’ve had British people tell me my East Anglian accent is very authentic. It always makes me smile because I learned it from my best friend’s mom. She was from that part of England and, as my second mom, Melissa and I even called her Mum.

Mum always corrected us if we tried something with an accent and didn’t get it right.

I do have a good German accent, due in no small measure to the fact that I’ve spent seven years in central Germany. While I am not even close to fluent, I have enough knowledge of the language to throw in a word or two while I fake it.

Having a little knowledge of German makes travel easier, but playing with the accent makes it fun.

I love languages and have a passable knowledge of several, but I like to joke that the only ones I am fluent in are “movie quotes,” “sarcasm,” “song lyrics,” and “baby talk.” But on this one day of the year, I get to pull out my pirate accent and have fun all day without fear of insulting anyone – and maybe getting a laugh or two.

So … have fun today with me! Let the “arghhh, matey” and “shiver me timbers” fly. Celebrate with a little silliness.

There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. It’s a lot more fun if you laugh along the way.
