Meeting at Dunkin Donuts, two couples and their dogs prepared for a trek at the break of dawn. Okay, that last part was a bit of a stretch — it was 8:30 a.m. and the trek only involved driving two hours north — but the couples involved did need proper road trip nourishment!
Vikki and Keith and their dogs Brandy and Summer had agreed to join us on a trip to the Arizona mountain town for its Faire on the Square Arts and Crafts Show. We had taken Enzo on one of his first road trips to Prescott and were impressed with its dog-friendly nature and coolish (at least compared to Phoenix) temperatures in the summer. We thought it would be a great place for us to spend some time with Vikki and Keith and their dogs while seeing what the Arts and Crafts show had to offer.
The trip didn’t disappoint. The drive up via the Granite Mountains was scenic and blissfully free of traffic (friends had gone via the highway two days prior and encountered traffic so bad they turned around) and we found parking in one of the free city garages. Prescott’s historic Courthouse Square was filled with vendor tents and people … and dogs. Dogs are the great equalizer. Dogs greet each other and immediately, you make new friends with their owners.
Everywhere we turned there were dogs on leashes, eager to meet all the other dogs on the paths. It seemed like every 10 feet or so, we’d be stopped by someone who wanted to pet Enzo, Brandy or Summer. They happily complied.
Yes, there were some beautiful arts and crafts and we stopped and chatted with several of the artisans. Vikki, in particular, chatted with some authors and vendors. She writes amazing children’s books and was hoping to get the inside scoop and make some connections for future opportunities to sell her wares. But that all seemed secondary to the joy we felt just spending time with our friends and our dogs. We grabbed some lunch at a pizza place we like just off Whisky Row and the dogs were thrilled to lie down and rest.
There’s a whole world out there waiting to be explored. Doing so with good friends and their dogs triples the pleasure!
