Chasing Dreams

The wheels of the plane lift off the runway as we “slip the surly bonds of Earth.” We soar into a picture-perfect, cloudless sky while the spring sun glints off rooftops, windows, and backyard pools that slip farther and farther away while we climb to our cruising altitude.

It never gets old: the thrill of flight, the excitement of travel, the never-ending quest to see more — do more!

Our destination is not new, but that doesn’t matter. Adventure is what you make it and there is always something new to experience. What will it be this time? What dream will be achieved? What new one born?

I’m not alone. There have always been poets and dreamers seeking adventure. John Gillespie Magee Jr. wrote the line I quoted earlier. Marco Polo set out from his home of Venice to explore Asia in the 13th Century. Christopher Columbus led three ships across the ocean in search of the unknown. Amelia Earhart gave her life in pursuit of her dream to fly around the world.

For me, the dream is simple: meet new people, try new foods, and see new and fascinating places. I’m not looking to trade goods like Marco Polo or claim new lands like Columbus. I don’t see myself setting any records or gaining notoriety. I do, however, dream of the unknown like the great adventurers of history.

I believe that if you don’t dream it, you will never achieve it. Setting your sights just out of reach keeps you pushing yourself a little more; reaching a little farther. Without them, we languish.

There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. Chase your dreams!
