As I struggled to fall asleep, Judy whispered in my ear, “Take your mind to your happy place — sailing on a fresh breeze, sitting by an alpine lake, or watching a glorious sunset.” My mind filled with visions of some of the stunning vistas I’ve seen and places we’ve been. Whether it was these visions or the soothing sound of Judy’s voice, I quickly fell asleep smiling.
Sitting in the courtyard with a fresh cup of coffee the next morning, Judy and I reminisced about some of these places and how they brought us joy. She remarked how, when we were eating a wonderfully light lunch of squid and potatoes in the middle of Amalfi’s busy town square, we “found peace in the cacophony of stimuli.” Such are the thoughts from which blogs are born …
For weeks, I’ve been thinking about the many times we’ve experienced “la dolce far niente” — the sweetness of doing nothing — during our travels. We’ll spend hours sitting with a glass of wine, a cocktail, or a cup of coffee experiencing the world, whether gazing at a spectacular view or simply watching the myriad people walk by.
Even closer to home, we revel in the opportunity to sit back and soak-in the world.
On long walks, we’ll “stop and smell the roses,” making sure to take in the wonders of the world around us. On one such walk along Bryce Canyon, Utah, I didn’t have a camera with me, so I quickly captured my thoughts on paper.
They say the world is your oyster, but I like to think the world is just one big room with a view. There’s a whole world out there just waiting to be explored. We’ll always take the time to experience the wonders of this earth; we hope you do, too.
